Painting the Dining Room Table (and other battles)

Only a couple weeks until Thanksgiving, but I'm craving turkey <em>now</em>. Big A and I had to go grocery shopping anyway, so I thought I'd get my wish. Guess what I ended up with? Ham. I'm not fond of ham, although Big A is. He <em>won</em>. <br /><br />And I didn't argue because, after all, we <em>are</em> going to have turkey in a couple of weeks. And because, sometimes, you have to <strong>Pick. Your. Battles</strong>. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><em>And This is My Battle...</em></span></div><br />That very same day, the following text conversation actually took place, and is word for word:<br /><br /><strong>Me:</strong> I want to paint the dining room table!<br /><br /><strong>Big A:</strong> No.<br /><br /><strong>Me:</strong> Can I paint just a stripe down the middle? <br /><br /><strong>Big A:</strong> No. <br /><br /><strong>Me:</strong> Envision it! <br /><br /><strong>Big A:</strong> No. <br /><br /><strong>Me:</strong> But it would look cool. <br /><br /><strong>Big A:</strong> Buy a table cloth. <br /><br /><strong>Me:</strong> C'mon. Please!<br /><br /><strong>Big A:</strong> No. <br /><br /><strong>Me:</strong> You're mean.<br /><br /><strong>Big A:</strong> I know honey. <br /><br />And then he changed the subject. And I, master commander and battle planner, silently prepared for battle. <br /><br />You see, I don't mind not winning in the turkey department. But the table? He hasn't heard the last of that one. Now that I have it in my head, I've become consumed by the idea. We have a large, oblong, oak dining room table (see above). It's sturdy, and reliable. But boring. If you couldn't already tell, I want to paint it. I like "sturdy and reliable", but I'd like it to have a little more personality. I want people to walk in and say "<em>WOW</em> look at that table!" </div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div><div style="text-align: left;">So without further ado, let the ambush begin! <br /><br />Here are my favorite ideas for the dining room table reformation. </div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><br />I found and example of a distressed black table. Our house is open plan, so it would fit right in. I would be willing to paint just the top of the table, and leave the chairs and legs oak. I think that would look amazing. Although the colors are too light for my taste, I love the <em>IDEA</em> of a stripe down the length.
