Dollar Store Sunburst Mirror (and Craft Contest)

Saw it on CNN? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">As a co-host, I thought I'd join in the festivities. So I bought a dollar store mirror (the back side of it pictured below), and decided to make a sunburst mirror for a half bath off of our kitchen. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I really would like a convex mirror, but unfortunately they don't have them at the dollar store. Time for Plan B.  <i>(Yes! Nice, right? </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The first thing I did was cut them off with a utility knife. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">For the sun rays I used paint sticks ~ I have a bag full of them (don't we all?). I lay them out the way I wanted them, and attached them with hot glue, to a sturdy piece of cardboard, that I had cut into a circle. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I then glued the mirror to the center of the "rays". I <strike>am stoopid</strike> live on the edge, so I painted them after they were glued down. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I first painted the sticks black, and then when that was dry, white. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Once the paint was dry I sanded away some of the white, so that the black would come through a bit, and to give it a weathered look. But, sunbursts are never going away. Do it! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">They're easy and fun to make.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><ol><li>Find a round mirror.<br /></li><li>Flip it over.<br /></li><li>Use a hot glue gun to glue the sunbursts to the back of the mirror: paint sticks, BBQ skewers, twigs, chopsticks, wood shims, wooden dowels... you get the idea.<br /></li><li>Evenly space your sunbursts. Giant Sunburst Mirror for a Large Space

Click <a href="http://happyhouseandhome.blogspot.com/2013/05/giant-wall-art-diy.html">HERE</a> to read that! </div><div style="text-align: center;">Honestly, that worked well, until Big A walked by it last week and if came tumbling down off the wall and needed to be replaced. It's not the first time, we all bump it. So, I came up with:</div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;">Plan B. </div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;">Bear with me, with this tutorial - there's a moral to this story. </div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;">I took off all of those sticks (the ones that weren't broken) and decided to re-do this as a sunburst, only using a mirror). I also made sure to secure the sticks, very well. The kind I bought has the little suction cups on the back. At first I tried to pry them off, but then I realized that I could use picture hanging wire to wrap around two of them, for hanging the finished sunburst mirror. </div><div align="center"> </div><div align="center">The mirror I bought was green, so I painted it black - but as it turns out I didn't need to. I was worried the color might show through the rope, but it doesn't in the end. </div><div align="center"> </div><div align="center">Take the glue gun and wrap the jute rope around the outside of the mirror. You can buy a bundle of sticks (the craft section of Walmart has them), or just gather them around your yard. Trim them and cut them to the length you want. You can see some of my sticks are curved and have some bumps, but they should be fairly straight. I used needle nose pliers and cut them to two different lengths.  Most people would use pruners, but I couldn't find mine! </div><div align="center"> </div><div align="center">Turn the dollar store mirror over, and use a glue gun to glue the sticks to the back side of the mirror. Seriously. I <em>LOVE</em> this project, and it looked impressive. However, if you make one, it needs a secluded spot where people aren't walking by all the time. It's light and easy to knock. The sticks are, well, sticky. At least for that hallway. Time to come up with Plan C. </div>

DIY Mirror Update

It's been a rainy, cold day here in Central New York. Everyone in my house has been napping, and it's dark and dreary. <br /><br />As I sat <em><strong>staring</strong></em> at the peanut butter cookies on the counter, I decided to do something to amuse myself, other than <em><strong>eat</strong></em> the peanut butter cookies that are sitting on the counter. Great willpower, eh?! <br /><br />Yesterday I made a sunburst mirror for my sister (<a href="http://happyhouseandhome.blogspot.com/2013/04/diy-sunburst-mirror-under-8.html">go here</a>), and mentioned the possibility of adding some "bling" to a sunburst. Well, I have a sunburst, and I love it, but it's a little plain for me. DIY Sunburst Mirror (Under $8!)

I know they've been popular, and perhaps over-done, but I don't think they'll ever go out of fashion. They make such a big impact, are simple to make, plus inexpensive.  All you need is a mirror, some spray paint and a glue gun.  For the sunburst, you can use just about anything you have around the house. <br /><br />I'm making this sunburst mirror using paint sticks and BBQ skewers. But I've seen it done with twigs, driftwood, paper, silverware, chopsticks, etc. <br /><br />If you want to see how I made my sunburst mirror (well, technically it's my sisters, cuz that's who I made it for) see below! <br /><br />First, I cut out a circle of card board - it's from the top of a pizza box, cuz that's what we had for our gourmet dinner last night. I figured I could use it to lay out the paint sticks and skewers. Waste not, want not, right?<br /><br />I just the skewers and paint sticks all out on the counter to make sure I was clear on my spacing. Big impact to fill a large blank space.<br/><br/>Consider this mirror, available on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=ur2&tag=fymoho-20" target="_blank">AMAZON</a>.  It's also is available in silver. Beautiful. However, this will set you back $350! The best thing about this mirror was the suction cups on the back - because, all I would have to do was wrap picture wire around two of the little cups, and hang the whole thing with a command hook. (I'm always looking for the easy way out!)<br/><br/>So, first things first. if you don't have a round mirror, I urge you to try a dollar store because it doesn't matter which color you get, because you can spray paint it the color you like.<br/><br/>For my project I used BBQ skewers for the starburst - I had two packages. In one package the sticks were much slimmer and more flimsy, so I used the thicker version.  I considered buying chopsticks at the dollar store, but there were only 8 per package, and I would need quite a few.  That's when I thought about the BBQ skewers. Every summer I pick up a package or two, so I had plenty!<br/><br/>Truly, this is one of the easiest projects ever.  You could use just about anything for the sun burst - chopsticks, real sticks, paint sticks, clothespins... Once the front was done, I turned it over and sprayed the back.<br/><br/>I knew exactly where I wanted this to hang.
